Gender Equality and Inclusion Policy

1. Introduction

Youthrise for Development (YFD) is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization committed to promoting sustainable development, youth empowerment, education, environmental conservation, gender equality, humanitarian assistance, and community resilience. YFD believes that sustainable development can only be achieved when every individual has equal opportunities to participate in and benefit from development regardless of gender, age, disability, ethnicity, religion, social status, or other characteristics. YFD recognizes that inequality, discrimination, and exclusion continue to limit access to education, livelihoods, leadership, healthcare, justice, and economic opportunities for many people, particularly women, girls, persons with disabilities, youth, internally displaced persons, and other marginalized groups. This Gender Equality and Inclusion Policy establishes YFD's commitment to promoting equality, preventing discrimination, advancing women's empowerment, and ensuring inclusive participation throughout all organizational activities.

2. Purpose of the Policy

The purpose of this policy is to:

  • Promote gender equality and social inclusion in all YFD programmes and operations.
  • Prevent discrimination and exclusion. Ensure equal opportunities for participation, leadership, employment, and access to services. Integrate gender and inclusion considerations into project planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation. Strengthen organizational accountability and compliance with national and international standards.

3. Scope of Application

This policy applies to:

  • Board members;
  • Employees;
  • Volunteers;
  • Interns;
  • Consultants;
  • Contractors;
  • Implementing partners;
  • Suppliers;
  • Community representatives;
  • Beneficiaries participating in YFD programmes.
  • It applies across all YFD offices, projects, events, and partnerships.

4. Definitions

4.1 Gender Equality

Gender equality means that all people, regardless of gender, enjoy equal rights, opportunities, responsibilities, and access to resources without discrimination.

4.2 Social Inclusion

Social inclusion is the process of ensuring that all individuals, particularly those who are marginalized or disadvantaged, can participate fully in social, economic, political, and community life.

4.3 Diversity

Diversity refers to the presence of different backgrounds, experiences, identities, perspectives, cultures, and abilities within communities and organizations.

4.4 Inclusion

Inclusion means creating environments where every person is respected, valued, and able to participate meaningfully without barriers or discrimination.

5. Guiding Principles

YFD is guided by the following principles:

7. Gender Equality in Employment

  • Designing activities that respond to diverse needs;
  • Monitoring equitable access to project benefits.

9. Participation of Women and Girls

YFD recognizes the essential role of women and girls in sustainable development. The organization is committed to:

  • Promoting girls' education;
  • Supporting women's leadership and economic empowerment;
  • Preventing gender-based discrimination;
  • Encouraging equal participation in decision-making;
  • Addressing barriers that limit opportunities for women and girls.

10. Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities

YFD is committed to promoting disability inclusion. Where possible, YFD will:

  • Provide accessible information;

11. Youth Inclusion

As a youth-focused organization, YFD believes that young people are active partners in development. YFD will:

  • Strengthen skills development; Create opportunities for meaningful engagement in programme planning and implementation.

12. Protection from Harassment, Exploitation, and Abuse

YFD maintains zero tolerance for:

  • Sexual harassment;
  • Sexual exploitation;
  • Sexual abuse;
  • Gender-based violence;
  • Bullying;
  • Intimidation;
  • Abuse of authority. All concerns shall be addressed in accordance with the YFD Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy and Code of Conduct.

13. Inclusive Communication

YFD will promote communication that is:

  • Respectful;
  • Inclusive;
  • Free from discriminatory language;
  • Culturally appropriate;
  • Accessible to diverse audiences where practical. Images, publications, and communication materials shall portray people with dignity and respect.

14. Partnerships

YFD encourages implementing partners, contractors, and service providers to uphold principles of gender equality and inclusion. Where appropriate, partnership agreements may include commitments to:

  • Non-discrimination;
  • Inclusive participation;
  • Equal opportunity;
  • Safeguarding.

15. Capacity Building

YFD will strengthen organizational capacity by:

  • Providing staff training on gender equality and inclusion;
  • Promoting awareness among volunteers and partners;

  • Encouraging continuous learning and improvement.

16. Monitoring and Accountability

YFD will monitor implementation of this policy through:

  • Periodic policy evaluations. Where feasible, gender- and age-disaggregated data will be collected to assess equitable participation and programme outcomes.

17. Roles and Responsibilities

Board of Directors The Board is responsible for providing strategic oversight and ensuring that gender equality and inclusion are integrated into organizational governance. Executive Management Management shall:

  • Implement this policy;
  • Allocate appropriate resources;
  • Promote an inclusive organizational culture;
  • Ensure compliance across programmes and operations.
  • Employees and Volunteers
  • All personnel are responsible for:
  • Treating others with dignity and respect;
  • Preventing discrimination;
  • Reporting misconduct;
  • Supporting inclusive practices.
  • Partners Partners working with YFD are expected to respect and promote the principles contained in this policy.

19. Policy Review

This policy will be reviewed at least every two years, or earlier where necessary, to reflect changes in legislation, organizational priorities, donor requirements, and international best practices.
